> **Short answer:** PSL betting means betting on South Africa's top league, the Betway Premiership. It has 16 clubs and runs from August to May. You can bet on results, goals and more with a provincially licensed operator.

## Betway Premiership at a glance

The PSL log (the league table) decides the title, the African places and relegation.

| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Official name | Betway Premiership (Betway is the title sponsor) |
| Organiser | Premier Soccer League (PSL) |
| Number of teams | 16 clubs, 30 league matches each |
| Season months | August to May |
| Relegation | Bottom club goes down; 15th place enters a promotion/relegation play-off |
| Promotion | Motsepe Foundation Championship winner goes up; 2nd and 3rd enter the play-off |
| CAF places | Top two: CAF Champions League. Third: CAF Confederation Cup |
| Cup route to Africa | Nedbank Cup winner can take a Confederation Cup place |

The 2026/27 season kicked off on the weekend of 1 August 2026. It is due to end in May 2027.

## Recent champions

| Season | Champion |
|---|---|
| 2025/26 | Orlando Pirates |
| 2024/25 | Mamelodi Sundowns |
| 2023/24 | Mamelodi Sundowns |

The 2024/25 title was Sundowns' eighth in a row. Pirates ended that run in 2025/26. It was their first league title since 2011/12.

## Biggest clubs and derbies

Mamelodi Sundowns have won the most league titles in the PSL era. Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs are the other big names. Both clubs have huge support across the country.

The biggest derby is the Soweto derby: Kaizer Chiefs vs Orlando Pirates. The April 2026 league derby was a sold-out game at FNB Stadium. Derbies can be tense, so form often matters less than usual.

## PSL betting example: Kaizer Chiefs vs Orlando Pirates

Say you think Pirates will not lose the Soweto derby. You can use [double chance](https://oddsclass.com/learn/double_chance/) (one bet that covers two of the three results).

Here are the prices (example odds):

| Market | Odds (example odds) | Return on R20 if it wins |
|---|---|---|
| Kaizer Chiefs win (1) | 2.90 | R58.00 |
| Draw (X) | 3.00 | R60.00 |
| Orlando Pirates win (2) | 2.50 | R50.00 |
| Draw or Pirates (X2) | 1.40 | R28.00 |

You stake (the money you bet) R20 on X2 at 1.40.

- If the match ends 1–1, you get R20 × 1.40 = R28. Your profit is R8.
- If the match ends 1–2 to Pirates, you also get R28.
- If the match ends 2–1 to Chiefs, you lose the R20.

Double chance pays less than a straight [1X2](https://oddsclass.com/learn/1x2/) bet. That is the price of covering two results. Check other amounts in the [payout calculator](https://oddsclass.com/tools/payout_calculator/).

## How to analyse a PSL match

To analyse a PSL match, check the same basics you would for any league. No single factor decides a game.

- **Form.** Look at the last five or six league games, not only the result. See our [team form](https://oddsclass.com/learn/team_form/) guide.
- **Home advantage.** Home teams know their pitch and have their fans. Read [how home advantage works](https://oddsclass.com/learn/home_advantage/).
- **Travel.** South Africa is a big country. Long trips between provinces can tire a squad.
- **Pitch and weather.** Pitch quality varies between grounds. Heavy summer rain can slow the ball.
- **Fixture congestion.** Clubs in the Nedbank Cup, MTN8 or CAF games may rotate players.
- **Team news.** Injuries and suspensions change the odds. See [how injuries affect odds](https://oddsclass.com/learn/injuries_and_odds/).
- **The PSL log.** A team fighting relegation or chasing a CAF place may play with more urgency. Read [how to read a league table](https://oddsclass.com/learn/league_table_betting/).

## Popular markets for PSL

The most popular PSL markets are the simple ones:

- [1X2](https://oddsclass.com/learn/1x2/): home win, draw or away win.
- [Double chance](https://oddsclass.com/learn/double_chance/): two results in one bet.
- [Draw no bet](https://oddsclass.com/learn/draw_no_bet/): your stake comes back if it is a draw.
- [Under 2.5 goals](https://oddsclass.com/learn/under_2_5_goals/) and [over 2.5 goals](https://oddsclass.com/learn/over_2_5_goals/): total goals in the match.
- [GG/NG](https://oddsclass.com/learn/gg_ng/): whether both teams score.

Be careful with PSL predictions you see online. No [tipster](https://oddsclass.com/learn/what_does_a_tipster_do/) knows the result in advance.

## Betting tax and law in South Africa

Online [sports betting](https://oddsclass.com/learn/what_is_sports_betting/) is legal in South Africa with an operator that holds a provincial licence. Online casino games, including crash games, are not lawful. You must be 18 or older. Read [is online betting legal in South Africa](https://oddsclass.com/za/learn/is_online_betting_legal_south_africa/) and our [South Africa hub](https://oddsclass.com/za/).

## Common mistakes

- **Backing the big three every week.** Sundowns, Pirates and Chiefs can all drop points.
- **Ignoring cup and CAF games.** A midweek trip can mean a tired or rotated team.
- **Treating derbies like normal games.** The Soweto derby can be tight and unpredictable.
- **Using an unlicensed site.** Check the operator holds a provincial licence first.
