> **Short answer:** To use team form, check a team's last five results, goals scored and conceded, and home or away record. Then ask who they played. Form is one clue for your estimate, not a prediction, and it is already part of the odds.

## Team form example: Kaizer Chiefs vs Orlando Pirates

Say Kaizer Chiefs play Orlando Pirates. A Chiefs win is priced at 2.10 (example odds).

Here is a made-up form table for the last five matches of each team. Points use 3 for a win and 1 for a draw.

| Team | Last 5 (made up) | Points | Goals scored | Goals conceded | Goal difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kaizer Chiefs | W W D L W | 10 | 7 | 4 | +3 |
| Orlando Pirates | D L W D L | 5 | 4 | 5 | −1 |

Chiefs look in better form. They won three, scored more and conceded less.

The [implied chance](https://oddsclass.com/learn/implied_probability/) of a Chiefs win at 2.10 is 1 ÷ 2.10 × 100 = 47.62%. The bookmaker has likely seen the same form. So the odds may already reflect it.

Say you stake (the money you bet) R20. If the match ends 2–1 to Chiefs, you get R20 × 2.10 = R42. Your profit is R22. If it ends in a draw or a Pirates win, you lose R20.

## How do you read the last 5 matches?

You read the last five matches by counting wins (W), draws (D) and losses (L). A line like "W W D L W" means three wins, one draw and one loss.

Turn it into points to compare teams. A win is 3 points, a draw is 1 and a loss is 0. The best possible score from five matches is 15.

Check the order on the site you use. Some show the newest match first, and some show it last. A team that lost its two newest matches may be in worse shape than one that lost two older ones.

## What is the difference between home form and away form?

Home form is a team's results at its own ground. Away form is its results at other grounds. Many teams play quite differently in the two.

So compare the right pair. If Chiefs play at home, look at Chiefs' home form and Pirates' away form.

| Team | Matches | Results (made up) | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simba (home) | 3 | W W W | 9 |
| Simba (away) | 2 | L D | 1 |

In this made-up example, Simba look strong overall. But their away record is weak. Read more in our [home advantage](https://oddsclass.com/learn/home_advantage/) guide.

## How do goals scored and conceded show form?

Goals scored and conceded show how well a team attacks and defends, not just its results. Two teams with the same points can look very different.

- A team that wins 1–0 every week has a strong defence but a quiet attack.
- A team that wins 3–2 every week attacks well but concedes a lot.

This matters for goals markets. A team that scores and concedes often may suit [over 2.5 goals](https://oddsclass.com/learn/over_2_5_goals/). A team that rarely concedes may suit [under 2.5](https://oddsclass.com/learn/under_2_5_goals/).

Goals can still be lucky. A deflection or a late penalty can change a score. Look at a few matches, not one.

## Why can team form mislead you?

Team form can mislead you because it ignores who a team played and uses only a few matches. Five results are a very small sample (a small number of matches to judge from).

- **Strength of opponents.** Three wins against bottom teams mean less than three wins against top teams.
- **Small samples.** One lucky goal can turn a loss into a draw and change the form line.
- **Changes in the squad.** A new coach or a key injury can make old form less useful.
- **Fixture busyness.** A team playing many matches in a short time may rest players.

Form is also public. Bookmakers see it too, so good form often means shorter odds (a lower price). Use form as one step in your [match analysis](https://oddsclass.com/learn/how_to_analyze_a_match/), then compare your estimate with the price. ## Common mistakes

- **Ignoring who they played.** Wins against weak teams are less impressive.
- **Using overall form only.** Home and away form can be very different.
- **Trusting two or three matches.** A tiny sample is mostly luck.
- **Forgetting the odds.** Good form is often already in the price.
- **Reading the form line backwards.** Check which side shows the newest match.
