## Laws and licences

Betting in Nigeria is regulated by the states, not one national body. This follows a Supreme Court ruling in November 2024.

Each state issues its own licences. Some states restrict gambling, so check where you live. In Abuja, the FCT Lottery Regulatory Office runs a separate regime.

In Lagos, the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority (LSLGA) licenses online [sports betting](https://oddsclass.com/learn/what_is_sports_betting/). An operator serving Lagos residents online needs an LSLGA licence. A licence from another state is not the same thing.

A Central Gaming Bill would have centralised regulation. The President rejected it in December 2025. Read [is betting legal in Nigeria](https://oddsclass.com/ng/learn/is_betting_legal_nigeria/) and [how to check a betting licence](https://oddsclass.com/learn/how_to_check_betting_licence/).

## Betting tax

In Lagos, licensed operators deduct a 5% withholding tax from your net winnings. Withholding tax is tax the payer keeps back before paying you.

It took effect in February 2026. The operator sends it to the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS). You do not pay it separately.

Other states may have different rules. Check your state's regulator, your operator's terms and your [bet slip](https://oddsclass.com/learn/bet_slip/). Full details are in [betting tax in Nigeria](https://oddsclass.com/ng/learn/betting_tax_nigeria/).

## Deposits and withdrawals

Most operators let you deposit and withdraw by mobile money or bank. Use an account in your own name.

Before your first withdrawal, you usually need to verify your account. In Nigeria, this includes your National Identification Number (NIN). Do it early, as explained in [account verification](https://oddsclass.com/learn/account_verification/).

## Nigeria betting example: Rivers United vs Remo Stars

This is an illustration of the Lagos tax. It is not a tip.

Emeka in Lagos stakes (bets) ₦1,000 on Rivers United to win at 2.20 (example odds). "Net winnings" here means return minus stake.

If the match ends 2–1 to Rivers United:

| Step | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Stake | — | ₦1,000 |
| Total return | ₦1,000 × 2.20 | ₦2,200 |
| Net winnings | ₦2,200 − ₦1,000 | ₦1,200 |
| 5% withholding tax | ₦1,200 × 0.05 | ₦60 |
| You receive | ₦2,200 − ₦60 | ₦2,140 |

If Remo Stars win or the match is a draw, Emeka loses the ₦1,000. Check returns with the [payout calculator](https://oddsclass.com/tools/payout_calculator/).

## Common mistakes

- Assuming one state's licence covers every state.
- Betting with a site that shows no licence number.
- Expecting the full return before tax to reach your wallet in Lagos.
- Waiting until your first withdrawal to add your NIN.
- Buying booking codes from strangers who promise wins.

## Bet responsibly

Only stake money you can afford to lose. Set a deposit limit in your bookmaker account before you start. If betting stops being fun, read [where to get help](https://oddsclass.com/learn/gambling_help/).
