> **Short answer:** Tanzania's 2026/27 budget introduced a 5% excise duty on betting stakes from 1 July 2026. It is 5% of what you stake, not of winnings. Our sources did not confirm final passage details, so check your bet slip.

## Betting tax example: Simba vs Young Africans

This is an illustration of the 5% excise on a stake. Your operator's [bet slip](https://oddsclass.com/learn/bet_slip/) shows the real amount.

You want to stake (bet) TSh 1,000 on Simba to win at 2.00 (example odds).

The excise is 5% of the stake: TSh 1,000 × 0.05 = TSh 50.

Operators may handle this in different ways. Some may take it from your stake. Others may charge it on top. Here is how each would look:

| Step | Taken from stake | Charged on top |
|---|---|---|
| Amount you pay | TSh 1,000 | TSh 1,050 |
| 5% excise | TSh 50 | TSh 50 |
| Stake on the bet | TSh 950 | TSh 1,000 |
| Return if Simba win (× 2.00) | TSh 1,900 | TSh 2,000 |

If Young Africans win or the match is a draw, you lose what you paid.

Check your slip to see which way your operator uses. Use the [payout calculator](https://oddsclass.com/tools/payout_calculator/) to check the return.

## What is the 5% excise on betting stakes?

It is a tax of 5% on the amount you stake. Excise duty is a tax on a specific activity. The stake is the money you bet.

The Ministry of Finance introduced it in the 2026/27 budget. It was set to start on 1 July 2026, the start of the financial year.

It is charged on stakes, not on winnings. This page does not cover any tax on winnings.

## What does the excise cover?

The 5% excise covers most types of betting and gaming:

| Type | Land-based | Online |
|---|---|---|
| Sports betting | Yes | Yes |
| Casino gaming | Yes | Yes |
| Slot games | Yes | Yes |
| Virtual games | Yes | Yes |

Virtual games include computer-made matches, such as [virtual football](https://oddsclass.com/learn/virtual_football/).

## Where does the money go?

The government expects the excise to raise about TZS 74.5 billion a year. That is about US$28.4 million.

10% of this revenue goes to the Gaming Board of Tanzania. It is meant to improve regulation and reduce the harm of gambling addiction.

## Is the excise final?

Our sources did not confirm final passage details. That means we cannot confirm every part of how it is applied.

Check your bet slip to see if 5% is charged. You can also check the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), the national tax office, for current rules.

## Who regulates betting in Tanzania?

The Gaming Board of Tanzania (GBT) regulates betting. It works under the Gaming Act 2003.

Only bet with operators licensed in Tanzania. If you want a break, you can ask to be excluded from betting for a set period.

## Common mistakes

- Thinking the 5% is taken from winnings instead of stakes.
- Forgetting the excise when planning your betting budget.
- Assuming every operator applies it the same way.
- Not checking the bet slip for the real stake and return.
- Raising stakes to "cover" the tax, which only increases what you can lose.
