## Laws and licences

Online [sports betting](https://oddsclass.com/learn/what_is_sports_betting/) is legal in South Africa with an operator that holds a provincial licence. Online casino is not lawful.

Gambling is regulated through the National Gambling Act and the nine provincial gambling acts. Reports say a licence from one province lets an operator take online sports bets nationally.

Online casino games are not lawful under the National Gambling Act 2004. This includes crash games, where a multiplier rises until it "crashes", like [Aviator](https://oddsclass.com/learn/how_aviator_works/).

| Type of online gambling | Legal status |
|---|---|
| Sports betting with a provincial licence | Legal |
| Online casino games | Not lawful |
| Crash games | Not lawful |
| Any site not on the NGB list | Not legally authorised |

The Remote Gambling Bill is only a proposal. It is not law. Read [is online betting legal in South Africa](https://oddsclass.com/za/learn/is_online_betting_legal_south_africa/).

## How to check a licence

Use the NGB Verified Operators portal. It launched on 8 April 2026.

Only operators listed there are legally authorised. Search for the site's name before you deposit. If it is not listed, do not use it.

You can report an illegal site to the NGB or your provincial licensing authority. See [how to check a betting licence](https://oddsclass.com/learn/how_to_check_betting_licence/).

## Betting tax

Our South Africa guide does not cover a tax on bettors' winnings. Always check your [bet slip](https://oddsclass.com/learn/bet_slip/) for the final amount.

The National Treasury has proposed a 20% national tax on online betting gross gaming revenue (GGR). GGR is the money operators keep after paying out winnings. This is a proposal, not law.

## Deposits and withdrawals

Most operators let you deposit and withdraw by mobile money or bank. Use an account in your own name.

Most licensed operators ask you to verify your account before your first withdrawal. Do it early, as explained in [account verification](https://oddsclass.com/learn/account_verification/). See also [how to withdraw betting winnings](https://oddsclass.com/learn/withdraw_betting_winnings/).

The local top flight is the Premier Soccer League (PSL). Read our [PSL guide](https://oddsclass.com/leagues/psl_south_africa/) for clubs and match analysis.

## South Africa betting example: Orlando Pirates vs Kaizer Chiefs

This is an illustration of a legal sports bet, shown before any deductions. It is not a tip. First, Thabo checks the operator is on the NGB list.

He stakes (bets) R20 on Orlando Pirates to win at 2.30 (example odds).

If the match ends 2–1 to Orlando Pirates:

| Step | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Stake | — | R20.00 |
| Total return | R20 × 2.30 | R46.00 |
| Profit | R46 − R20 | R26.00 |

If Kaizer Chiefs win or the match is a draw, Thabo loses the R20. Check returns with the [payout calculator](https://oddsclass.com/tools/payout_calculator/).

## Common mistakes

- Playing crash games on sites that are not legally authorised.
- Treating the Remote Gambling Bill as if it were already law.
- Depositing before checking the NGB Verified Operators portal.
