What Is Cash Out in Betting?
Cash out lets you end a bet before all matches finish. The bookmaker offers you an amount based on how the bet is going. You take that amount now, and the bet is settled. The offer is usually lower than the bet's fair value.
Cash out example: Remo Stars vs Kano Pillars
Say you stake (the money you bet) ₦1,000 on Remo Stars to win at 2.50 (example odds). If Remo Stars win, you get ₦1,000 × 2.50 = ₦2,500.
After 70 minutes, Remo Stars lead 1–0. The bookmaker offers a cash out of ₦1,850.
You now have three choices:
| Your choice | Remo Stars win | Remo Stars draw or lose |
|---|---|---|
| Do not cash out | ₦2,500.00 | ₦0.00 |
| Full cash out | ₦1,850.00 | ₦1,850.00 |
| Partial cash out (half) | ₦2,175.00 | ₦925.00 |
If you do not cash out and the match ends 1–1, you lose the ₦1,000. If you take the full cash out, you get ₦1,850 whatever happens.
What is a full cash out?
A full cash out settles your whole bet now for the amount offered. Your bet ends and the final result no longer matters.
In the example above, you take ₦1,850. Your profit is ₦1,850 − ₦1,000 = ₦850.
If Remo Stars go on to win, you missed ₦650 (₦2,500 − ₦1,850). If they concede, you avoided a loss. You cannot know which will happen.
What is a partial cash out?
A partial cash out settles part of your bet now and leaves the rest running. Not every bookmaker offers it.
In the example, you cash out half. You get half the offer: ₦1,850 ÷ 2 = ₦925. Half your stake, ₦500, stays on Remo Stars at 2.50.
- If Remo Stars win: ₦925 + (₦500 × 2.50) = ₦925 + ₦1,250 = ₦2,175
- If they draw or lose: you keep the ₦925 only
This sits between the two other choices. You keep some money and some chance of the full win.
Why is the cash out offer lower than the fair value?
The offer is lower because the bookmaker keeps a margin (its built-in profit). You pay a small price for ending the bet early.
You can estimate the fair value with live odds. Divide your full potential return by the current live odds for your pick.
Back to Remo Stars. At 70 minutes, say the live odds for a Remo Stars win are 1.25 (example odds).
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Potential return | ₦2,500.00 |
| Live odds for your pick | 1.25 |
| Fair value (₦2,500 ÷ 1.25) | ₦2,000.00 |
| Cash out offer | ₦1,850.00 |
| Gap kept by the bookmaker | ₦150.00 |
The live odds also include a margin, so this is only a rough guide. Each time you cash out, you usually give up some value. Doing it often can cost you over many bets. Learn more in our implied probability guide.
When may cash out make sense?
Cash out may make sense when your situation or the match has changed. It should be a planned choice, not a panic move.
Situations where some people use it:
- The match has changed. A red card or injury hurts your team.
- You need the money. You would rather have a smaller amount now than risk it.
- You set a target before. You planned to take a certain amount and the offer reaches it.
Cash out is often a poor choice when you only feel nervous. If you still believe in your pick, the gap shown above is a cost.
Cash out on accumulators
Cash out on an accumulator (one bet that joins several picks) lets you take money before the last pick plays. Many people use it when one leg is left.
Example: GH₵20 on a four-pick accumulator at 1.50, 1.60, 1.80 and 2.00 (example odds).
- Combined odds = 1.50 × 1.60 × 1.80 × 2.00 = 8.64
- Potential return = GH₵20 × 8.64 = GH₵172.80
The first three picks win. The last pick is still at 2.00 (example odds). The fair value is about GH₵172.80 ÷ 2.00 = GH₵86.40.
The bookmaker may offer less, such as GH₵78.00. You choose between GH₵78.00 now or a chance at GH₵172.80. Read our accumulator bet guide for more.
Why is cash out not available or suspended?
Cash out is not available when the bookmaker does not offer it on that bet. It is suspended when the bookmaker pauses it for a short time.
Common reasons:
- Big moments in a match. A goal, penalty, red card or video review can pause cash out.
- Market not covered. Some markets or leagues never offer cash out.
- Bet type. Some bonus bets or special bets cannot be cashed out.
- Price changes. The offer can change before you confirm it.
Cash out can return later in the match, or not at all. Never place a bet assuming you can cash out.
Common mistakes
- Cashing out from fear. Each cash out usually gives up some value.
- Expecting cash out to always be there. It can be suspended at key moments.
- Forgetting the result no longer counts. A full cash out cannot be undone if your pick wins.
- Treating the offer as fair. It usually includes the bookmaker's margin.
