What Is European Handicap in Betting?
European handicap gives one team a goal start or a goal deficit before the match. You then bet on home, handicap draw or away, using the adjusted score. There is no stake refund, so every bet wins or loses.
European handicap example: Remo Stars vs Kano Pillars
Say Remo Stars are the stronger side. The bookmaker offers a -1 handicap on Remo Stars. The minus sign means one goal is taken away from their score.
There are three options (example odds):
- Remo Stars -1 at 2.80
- Handicap draw at 3.40
- Kano Pillars +1 at 2.30
You stake (the money you bet) ₦1,000 on one of them. Take one goal from Remo Stars, then read the new score.

If the match ends 2–0, Remo Stars -1 returns ₦1,000 × 2.80 = ₦2,800. Your profit is ₦1,800.
If the match ends 2–1, the handicap score is 1–1. Only the handicap draw wins: ₦1,000 × 3.40 = ₦3,400.
What is 3-way handicap?
A 3-way handicap is another name for European handicap. It has three outcomes, like a normal 1X2 bet (home, draw, away).
The key point is that the handicap draw is its own outcome. It has its own odds. If the adjusted score is level, home and away bets both lose. Only the handicap draw bet wins.
This is why a one-goal win is a loss for a -1 bet. It is not a refund.
European handicap +1 example
European handicap +1 adds one goal to your team's score before the result is read. It wins if your team wins or draws the real match.
Example: Hearts of Oak +1 vs Asante Kotoko at 1.85 (example odds). You stake GH₵10.
- If the match ends 1–1, the handicap score is 2–1 to Hearts. You get GH₵10 × 1.85 = GH₵18.50. Profit is GH₵8.50.
- If Hearts win 1–0, you also win GH₵18.50.
- If Kotoko win by exactly one goal, say 1–0, the handicap score is 1–1. That is a handicap draw, so your +1 bet loses.
- If Kotoko win by two or more, you lose.

European vs Asian handicap
The main difference is the stake refund. Asian handicap can return your stake when the result lands on the line. European handicap never returns your stake.

When is European handicap used?
European handicap is used most when one team is much stronger than the other. In those matches the normal 1X2 odds on the favourite can be very low.
Common uses:
- Strong favourites. A -1 or -2 handicap gives higher odds than a plain home win.
- Backing the underdog. A +1 handicap covers a draw and a narrow upset.
- Betting on a close win. The handicap draw lets you bet on a win by exactly one goal (with -1).
Higher odds always mean a lower chance of winning. A handicap does not make a bet safer.
Common mistakes
- Expecting a refund on a one-goal win. With European -1, a one-goal win is a handicap draw, so a home bet loses.
- Confusing European and Asian -1. They settle differently on the same score.
- Applying the handicap to the wrong team. Check which team has the minus sign.
- Forgetting the handicap draw option. It is a separate bet with its own odds.
- Choosing big handicaps only for big odds. Bigger odds come with a lower chance of winning.
