How Do You Read a League Table for Betting?

Short answer

To read a league table for betting, look past the position. Check points, goal difference and how many games each team has played. Then compare home and away records, each team's motivation and its recent form.

League table example: Tusker vs AFC Leopards

TuskervsAFC LeopardsExample match · example odds · Kenyan Premier League

Here is a made-up mini table. The numbers are fictional and for example only.

Pos Team P W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Gor Mahia 20 13 4 3 35 15 +20 43
2 Tusker 18 12 4 2 30 12 +18 40
3 AFC Leopards 20 11 5 4 28 18 +10 38

P is played, W is won, D is drawn and L is lost. GF is goals for, GA is goals against, and GD is goal difference.

Tusker are second, but they have played two games fewer than Gor Mahia. They also have the best defence here, with only 12 goals conceded.

Say you stake (the money you bet) KSh 50 on Tusker to beat AFC Leopards at 1.95 (example odds). If the match ends 2–1 to Tusker, you get KSh 50 × 1.95 = KSh 97.50. Try other amounts with the payout calculator.

How are points worked out?

Points are worked out as 3 for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss. This is the system in most football leagues.

Check it with Gor Mahia: 13 wins × 3 = 39, plus 4 draws × 1 = 4. That makes 43 points.

Points show results, not how well a team played. A team can collect points with lucky wins. It can also play well and still lose.

What does goal difference tell you?

Goal difference tells you how much a team outscores its opponents. It is goals for minus goals against.

Gor Mahia have 35 − 15 = +20. AFC Leopards have 28 − 18 = +10. Both teams are close on points, but Gor Mahia win their games by bigger margins.

Goals for and against are also useful alone. A team that scores and concedes a lot may suit goals markets, such as over 2.5 goals.

Why do games played and games in hand matter?

Games played matter because a team with fewer games can still catch up. The extra matches are called games in hand.

Tusker have 40 points from 18 games. Gor Mahia have 43 from 20. If Tusker win both games in hand, they reach 40 + 6 = 46 points.

So the table can make Tusker look weaker than they are. A fair check is points per game. Tusker have 40 ÷ 18 = 2.22, while Gor Mahia have 43 ÷ 20 = 2.15.

How do you use home and away tables?

You use home and away tables to see how a team does in each setting. Many teams play much better at home.

Here is a made-up split for Tusker:

Tusker (example) P W D L Pts
Home 9 8 1 0 25
Away 9 4 3 2 15
Total 18 12 4 2 40

At home, Tusker average 25 ÷ 9 = 2.78 points per game. Away, they average 15 ÷ 9 = 1.67. Their home record is much stronger.

When Tusker play at home, the home table matters more than the full table. Read more about home advantage.

How does motivation change a match?

Motivation can change how hard a team fights for a result. The table shows you what each team is playing for.

  • Title race. Teams near the top often need wins and may attack more.
  • Relegation. Teams near the bottom may fight hard to avoid going down.
  • Mid-table. A team with nothing left to play for may rest players late in the season.

Motivation is hard to measure. A team fighting relegation can still be weak. Use it as one clue, not the main reason to bet.

Why can the table hide recent form?

The table can hide recent form because it adds up the whole season. A team may have started well but be struggling now.

Say Gor Mahia's last five results were loss, draw, loss, win, draw. That is only 5 points from a possible 15. They are top, but their recent form is poor.

Always check the last five or six matches too. Our guide on team form explains how.

Common mistakes

  • Looking only at position. Check points, goal difference and games played.
  • Ignoring games in hand. A team lower down may have matches left to catch up.
  • Using the full table for every match. Home and away records can be very different.
  • Trusting season totals over recent form. A top team can be in a bad run.
  • Overrating motivation. Wanting to win does not make a weak team strong.
