What Is Over 1.5 Goals in Betting?
Over 1.5 goals is a bet that the match will have two or more goals in total. It does not matter which team scores. If the match ends 0–0, 1–0 or 0–1, the bet loses.
Over 1.5 goals example: Simba vs Young Africans
Say you stake (the money you bet) TSh 1,000 on over 1.5 goals at 1.30 (example odds).
The goals of both teams are added together. Here is how different scores settle:
| Final score | Total goals | Over 1.5 result | Return on TSh 1,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–0 | 0 | Lose | TSh 0.00 |
| 1–0 | 1 | Lose | TSh 0.00 |
| 0–1 | 1 | Lose | TSh 0.00 |
| 1–1 | 2 | Win | TSh 1,300.00 |
| 2–0 | 2 | Win | TSh 1,300.00 |
| 3–2 | 5 | Win | TSh 1,300.00 |
If the match ends 1–1, there are two goals. You get TSh 1,000 × 1.30 = TSh 1,300. Your profit is TSh 300.
If the match ends 1–0, there is only one goal. You lose the TSh 1,000.
How do you calculate an over 1.5 payout?
You calculate an over 1.5 payout with stake × odds. That gives your return. Subtract your stake to find your profit.
Example: USh 2,000 on over 1.5 goals in KCCA vs Vipers at 1.30 (example odds).
- Return = USh 2,000 × 1.30 = USh 2,600
- Profit = USh 2,600 − USh 2,000 = USh 600
Extra goals do not change the payout. A 2–0 and a 4–3 pay the same. Check other amounts in the payout calculator.
Why do low over 1.5 odds still carry risk?
Low odds mean the bookmaker thinks a win is likely, not certain. One quiet 1–0 or 0–0 still loses your stake.
The risk grows fast when you join many over 1.5 picks in one accumulator (one bet that joins several picks). Every pick must win.
Here is ₦1,000 on picks at 1.30 each (example odds):
| Picks | Combined odds | Return on ₦1,000 | Implied chance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1.30 | ₦1,300.00 | 76.92% |
| 2 | 1.69 | ₦1,690.00 | 59.17% |
| 3 | 2.20 | ₦2,197.00 | 45.52% |
| 4 | 2.86 | ₦2,856.10 | 35.01% |
| 5 | 3.71 | ₦3,712.93 | 26.93% |
Implied chance is 1 ÷ odds, shown as a percentage. It is the bookmaker's estimate, not a fact. Returns use the full combined odds, before rounding.
Five picks at 1.30 give combined odds of 1.30 × 1.30 × 1.30 × 1.30 × 1.30 = 3.71. The implied chance is about 26.9%. That is roughly one win in four slips.
Each pick feels safe alone. Together, losing is more likely than winning. Read more in our accumulator bet guide.
What is the difference between over 1.5 and over 2.5?
The difference is the number of goals you need. Over 1.5 needs two or more goals. Over 2.5 needs three or more.
Over 1.5 wins more often, so it pays less. Here is GH₵10 on each in Asante Kotoko vs Hearts of Oak (example odds):
| Final score | Total goals | Over 1.5 at 1.30 | Over 2.5 at 2.10 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–0 | 1 | Lose: GH₵0.00 | Lose: GH₵0.00 |
| 1–1 | 2 | Win: GH₵13.00 | Lose: GH₵0.00 |
| 2–0 | 2 | Win: GH₵13.00 | Lose: GH₵0.00 |
| 2–1 | 3 | Win: GH₵13.00 | Win: GH₵21.00 |
A two-goal match is the key difference. It wins over 1.5 but loses over 2.5. See our over 2.5 goals guide.
Over 1.5 first half vs full time
Over 1.5 first half needs two or more goals before half-time. Full-time over 1.5 counts goals from the whole match.
The first half is only about 45 minutes, so two goals are less likely. That is why the odds are higher.
Example: R20 on Kaizer Chiefs vs Orlando Pirates (example odds). First-half over 1.5 is at 3.10. Full-time over 1.5 is at 1.30.
| Half-time score | Final score | First half over 1.5 | Full time over 1.5 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–0 | 2–1 | Lose: R0.00 | Win: R26.00 |
| 1–0 | 1–0 | Lose: R0.00 | Lose: R0.00 |
| 1–1 | 1–1 | Win: R62.00 | Win: R26.00 |
| 2–0 | 3–1 | Win: R62.00 | Win: R26.00 |
The first-half bet at 3.10 has an implied chance of about 32.26%. Goals after half-time do not help it at all.
Common mistakes
- Thinking low odds mean a safe bet. A 1–0 result still loses over 1.5.
- Building long over 1.5 accumulators. Five picks at 1.30 give about a 26.9% implied chance.
- Mixing up first half and full time. First-half markets ignore second-half goals.
- Counting only one team's goals. Over 1.5 uses the total of both teams.
- Expecting extra time to count. Most bookmakers use normal time only.
