How Does Betting Tax in Nigeria Work?

Short answer

In Lagos, licensed operators deduct a 5% withholding tax from players' net winnings before paying out. It started with immediate effect in February 2026. Other states may have different rules, so check your state's regulator and your operator's terms.

Betting tax example: Remo Stars vs Kano Pillars

Remo StarsvsKano PillarsExample match · example odds · NPFL

This is an illustration of how the Lagos 5% tax can apply. Your bet slip shows the final amount.

You stake (bet) ₦1,000 on Remo Stars to win at 2.50 (example odds).

In this illustration, "net winnings" means winnings minus stake. That is the profit part of the return.

If the match ends 2–1 to Remo Stars:

Step Calculation Amount
Stake — ₦1,000
Total return ₦1,000 × 2.50 ₦2,500
Net winnings ₦2,500 − ₦1,000 ₦1,500
5% withholding tax ₦1,500 × 0.05 ₦75
You receive ₦2,500 − ₦75 ₦2,425

If Kano Pillars win or the match is a draw, you lose the ₦1,000 stake. No tax applies to a lost bet in this example.

Use the payout calculator to check the return before tax.

What is the Lagos betting tax?

The Lagos betting tax is a 5% withholding tax on players' net winnings. Withholding tax is tax the payer keeps back before paying you.

The Lagos State Government introduced it through a public notice. The notice came from Bashir Are, CEO of the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority (LSLGA). It took effect immediately. Reports on it appeared between 20 and 22 February 2026.

How is the 5% deducted?

Licensed operators deduct the 5% automatically at payout. This happens before your winnings are credited to your account.

The operator then remits (sends) the money to the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS). You do not pay it separately.

Reports say the deducted tax can serve as a tax credit. A tax credit is an amount that can count towards other tax you owe. Ask a tax adviser how this works for you.

No minimum amount was mentioned in the reported notice. Check your operator's terms to see how they apply it.

Why do I need my NIN?

You must give your National Identification Number (NIN) to bet with a licensed operator under the Lagos rules. This is part of KYC (know your customer) checks.

KYC means the operator confirms who you are. Keep your NIN details correct in your account.

Do other states charge betting tax?

It depends on the state. Each Nigerian state regulates gambling itself, so tax rules can differ.

Common mistakes

  • Expecting the full return before tax to reach your account.
  • Thinking the 5% is taken from your stake. In this example it is taken from net winnings.
  • Not giving a correct NIN, which can delay your account checks.
  • Assuming Lagos rules apply in every state.
  • Raising stakes to "cover" the tax, which only increases what you can lose.
