How Do I Deposit With M-Pesa for Betting?
Open M-Pesa, choose Lipa na M-Pesa, then Paybill. Enter the business number from the operator's official site, the account number they tell you, the amount and your PIN. You get a confirmation SMS. In Kenya, 5% excise is taken, so KSh 100 becomes KSh 95.
M-Pesa deposit example: Gor Mahia vs AFC Leopards
This is an illustration of what happens to your money. It is not a tip.
Brian wants to stake (bet) on Gor Mahia to win at 1.90 (example odds). He sends KSh 100 by M-Pesa paybill.
| Step | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Amount sent by M-Pesa | — | KSh 100 |
| 5% deposit excise | KSh 100 × 0.05 | KSh 5 |
| Money in betting wallet | KSh 100 − KSh 5 | KSh 95 |
| Possible return if Gor Mahia win | KSh 95 × 1.90 | KSh 180.50 |
If the match ends 2–1 to Gor Mahia, the bet wins. If it is a draw or AFC Leopards win, Brian loses the KSh 95.
Tax on winnings may also be deducted at payout. See the Kenya betting tax guide. Check returns with the payout calculator.
How to deposit with M-Pesa paybill
You deposit by paying the operator through Lipa na M-Pesa, using Paybill. The menu names may look a little different on your phone.
- Open the M-Pesa menu or app.
- Choose Lipa na M-Pesa.
- Choose Paybill.
- Enter the business number. Get it only from the operator's official website or app.
- Enter the account number exactly as the operator instructs. This is often your phone number or account ID.
- Enter the amount you want to deposit.
- Enter your M-Pesa PIN and confirm.
- Wait for the confirmation SMS from M-Pesa.
Check the business name on the confirm screen before you enter your PIN. If the name is not your operator, stop.
We do not list paybill numbers. They differ by operator and can change.
Tanzania also uses M-Pesa, but steps and taxes there are different.
How the 5% deposit excise works
Kenya charges a 5% excise duty on money you deposit for betting. Excise duty is a tax on a specific activity.
The operator takes it when your deposit arrives. You do not pay it separately.
| You send | 5% excise | Wallet gets |
|---|---|---|
| KSh 50 | KSh 2.50 | KSh 47.50 |
| KSh 100 | KSh 5 | KSh 95 |
Plan your budget with this in mind. The money you can stake is less than the money you send.
M-Pesa transaction charges are separate
M-Pesa transaction charges are not the same as the betting tax. They are fees for using M-Pesa.
Some paybills charge the sender, and some do not. The amount can depend on how much you send. M-Pesa shows any charge on the confirm screen or in the SMS.
So one deposit can have two costs: the 5% excise and any M-Pesa charge. Read both before you confirm.
Deposit not showing: what to do
If your deposit is not in your wallet, first check that you got the M-Pesa confirmation SMS. No SMS usually means the payment did not go through.
If you got the SMS, follow these steps:
- Wait a few minutes. Network delays happen.
- Log out of your betting account and log in again.
- Check the business number and account number in the SMS.
- Find the M-Pesa transaction code in the SMS. It is a short mix of letters and numbers.
- Contact the operator's support through its official site or app. Give them the transaction code.
If you used the wrong account number, the money may sit with the operator unmatched. Support can often find it with the transaction code.
If you sent money to the wrong paybill, contact M-Pesa customer care quickly through official channels.
Safety: your PIN and fake paybill scams
Your M-Pesa PIN is yours alone. Never share it with anyone, including people who say they are from the operator or M-Pesa.
Watch for these scams:
- Fake paybill numbers. Scammers send a "new paybill" by SMS or social media. Use only the number on the official site or app.
- "Wrong deposit" calls. Someone says they sent you money by mistake and asks you to send it back. Check your real M-Pesa balance first.
- Bonus offers in chat groups. "Deposit here for a double bonus" is a common trick.
- Unlicensed sites. Only deposit with an operator licensed in Kenya. Learn how to check a betting licence.
Common mistakes
- Using a paybill number from a text, post or friend instead of the official site.
- Typing the wrong account number, so the deposit cannot be matched.
- Forgetting that 5% excise reduces the money you can stake.
- Sharing your M-Pesa PIN with "support" on the phone.
- Depositing again and again to chase a loss.
FAQ
Where do I find the paybill number for my betting account?
Only on the operator's official website or app. Paybill numbers differ by operator, so never use one sent by a stranger.
Why did my wallet get less than I sent?
A 5% excise duty is taken from betting deposits in Kenya. For KSh 100 sent, your wallet gets KSh 95.
Are M-Pesa charges the same as the betting tax?
No. M-Pesa transaction charges are separate from the 5% excise. Check the charges shown before you confirm.
Will the operator ever ask for my M-Pesa PIN?
No. A real operator never needs your PIN. Anyone who asks for it is trying to steal your money.
