Laws and licences

The Gambling Regulatory Authority (GRA) regulates betting in Kenya. It took over from the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) on 28 February 2026.

Only bet with operators licensed in Kenya. A licence from another country does not make a site legal here. Look for the licence number and regulator name in the site footer.

Then confirm it with the GRA. Read how to check a betting licence for the steps and red flags.

Betting tax

Kenyan bettors pay two main taxes in 2026. Both are taken by the operator, not paid by you to the tax office.

  • 5% excise duty on deposits. KSh 100 deposited becomes KSh 95 in your wallet.
  • 20% withholding tax on winnings. It is deducted before you get paid.

These rules come from the Finance Act, 2026. Most measures took effect on 1 July 2026. Guidance on exactly which payouts are covered was still being clarified, so check your bet slip.

Deposits and withdrawals

You can deposit with M-Pesa through Lipa na M-Pesa Paybill. Get the business number only from the operator's official site or app.

M-Pesa transaction charges are separate from the 5% excise. Read both before you confirm. Never share your M-Pesa PIN with anyone. Our M-Pesa deposit guide explains each step.

Withdrawals go to mobile money or bank. Verify your account early, as explained in account verification. No data? See USSD betting.

Football to bet on

The local top flight is the Kenyan Premier League. Read our Kenyan Premier League guide for clubs and match analysis.

The English Premier League is the most popular foreign league. Its matches have many markets and plenty of team news.

Kenya betting example: AFC Leopards vs Tusker

AFC LeopardsvsTuskerExample match · example odds · Kenyan Premier League

This is an illustration of both Kenyan taxes. It is not a tip.

Kevin deposits KSh 100 by M-Pesa. The 5% excise is KSh 5, so his wallet gets KSh 95. He stakes (bets) all KSh 95 on AFC Leopards to win at 2.20 (example odds).

If the match ends 2–1 to AFC Leopards:

Step Calculation Amount
Deposit — KSh 100
5% deposit excise KSh 100 × 0.05 KSh 5
Stake KSh 100 − KSh 5 KSh 95
Total return KSh 95 × 2.20 KSh 209
Winnings (profit) KSh 209 − KSh 95 KSh 114
20% withholding tax KSh 114 × 0.20 KSh 22.80
You receive KSh 209 − KSh 22.80 KSh 186.20

This example applies the 20% to profit only, as an illustration. If Tusker win or it is a draw, Kevin loses the KSh 95. Check returns with the payout calculator.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting that the 5% excise reduces the money you can stake.
  • Assuming the 2025 tax rules still apply in 2026.
  • Using a paybill number sent by text or social media.
  • Sharing your M-Pesa PIN with "support" on the phone.
  • Depositing again and again to chase a loss.
