Laws and licences

The Gaming Commission of Ghana regulates betting. It works under the Gaming Act 2006 (Act 721).

Lotteries are separate. The National Lottery Authority oversees them.

Only bet with an operator licensed in Ghana. Look for the licence number and regulator name in the site footer. Then confirm it with the Gaming Commission. Read how to check a betting licence.

The Gaming Commission also introduced mandatory biometric checks linked to national IDs. Biometric means using your face or fingerprint to prove who you are. Have your national ID ready when you sign up.

Betting tax

Bettors in Ghana do not pay tax on winnings under the rules in our sources. The 10% withholding tax on betting, gaming and lotto winnings was repealed in 2025.

Parliament approved the repeal on 26 March 2025. Reports in April 2025 said the tax had been abolished.

Operators still pay a 20% tax on their gross gaming revenue (GGR). GGR is the money an operator keeps after paying out winnings. You do not pay it directly.

If you see a deduction on your bet slip, ask the operator what it is for. Read the full guide: betting tax in Ghana.

Deposits and withdrawals

Most operators let you deposit and withdraw by mobile money, such as MTN MoMo, or bank. The number or account must be in your own name.

A name mismatch is a common reason a withdrawal stays "pending". Read why is my withdrawal delayed and how to withdraw betting winnings.

Ghana betting example: Hearts of Oak vs Asante Kotoko

Hearts of OakvsAsante KotokoExample match · example odds · Ghana Premier League

This is an illustration of a win with no tax on winnings. It is not a tip.

Kwame stakes (bets) GH₵10 on Hearts of Oak to win at 2.80 (example odds).

If the match ends 2–1 to Hearts of Oak:

Step Calculation Amount
Stake — GH₵10.00
Total return GH₵10 × 2.80 GH₵28.00
Winnings (profit) GH₵28 − GH₵10 GH₵18.00
Tax on winnings Repealed in 2025 GH₵0.00
You receive — GH₵28.00

If Asante Kotoko win or the match is a draw, Kwame loses the GH₵10. Check returns with the payout calculator.

Common mistakes

  • Thinking the 10% tax on winnings still applies after the 2025 repeal.
  • Confusing the operator's 20% GGR tax with a tax on your winnings.
  • Using a MoMo number registered in someone else's name.
  • Betting with unlicensed sites to avoid ID checks.
  • Raising stakes because there is no tax, which only increases what you can lose.
