Laws and licences
The National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB) regulates betting in Uganda. It works under the Lotteries and Gaming Act 2016.
Only bet with operators licensed in Uganda. Licensed operators must follow the rules on tax and on protecting players.
Look for the licence number and regulator name in the site footer. Then confirm it with the NLGRB. Read how to check a betting licence.
Betting tax
Uganda has two betting taxes to know about. One is in force for operators, and one is proposed for bettors.
- 30% operator tax. From 1 July 2026, operators pay 30% of their gross gaming revenue (GGR). GGR is stakes taken minus winnings paid out. You do not pay it.
- 15% tax on net winnings. This was proposed in the Income Tax (Amendment) Bill 2026. Net winnings means your profit.
On 10 July 2026, President Museveni returned the bill to Parliament. In August 2026, Parliament removed an exemption for land-based casino winnings. Our sources did not confirm the final assent or start date.

Deposits and withdrawals
Most operators let you deposit and withdraw by mobile money or bank. The number or account should be in your own name.
Verify your account soon after you sign up, not when you want to withdraw. See account verification and how to withdraw betting winnings.

Uganda betting example: Vipers vs KCCA
This is an illustration of how the proposed 15% tax would work if it applies. It is not a tip.
Moses stakes (bets) USh 2,000 on Vipers to win at 2.20 (example odds).
If the match ends 2–1 to Vipers:
| Step | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Stake | — | USh 2,000 |
| Total return | USh 2,000 × 2.20 | USh 4,400 |
| Net winnings (profit) | USh 4,400 − USh 2,000 | USh 2,400 |
| 15% tax (if it applies) | USh 2,400 × 0.15 | USh 360 |
| You receive | USh 4,400 − USh 360 | USh 4,040 |
If the 15% is not deducted, Moses receives the full USh 4,400. If KCCA win or it is a draw, he loses the USh 2,000. Check returns with the payout calculator.
Common mistakes
- Thinking the operator's 30% tax is taken from your winnings.
- Assuming the 15% tax is already deducted, or that it never will be.
- Working out the 15% on the whole return instead of on net winnings.
- Betting with a site that shows no NLGRB licence.
- Raising stakes to "cover" a tax, which only increases what you can lose.
